'Mentalist': Can show survive without Red John?

"The Mentalist" will offer a series-altering episode this weekend.

The CBS drama will be done with serial killer Red John in a shocking episode at 10 p.m. Sunday. Red John wiped out the wife and daughter of title character Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), who has been on a quest for vengeance.

Can the show go on without Red John?

When I asked series creator Bruno Heller in a conference call on Tuesday, he sounded hopeful but uncertain.

"If it can't then, then that's what happens," Heller said. "It felt very much to all of us like that chapter of the story was done. Frankly, I think the great asset and value of the show is in Baker's head and what he does."

And Heller added: "The moment-to-moment pleasures of the show are delivered by Simon Baker and his people, not by Red John. ... I think it's going to be a great show after Red John."

Sunday's installment is a great episode, one "The Mentalist" has been building to for five and a half years.

The actor who learned he was playing Red John found out at the last moment. "He was thrilled," Heller said.

He is also superb. But "The Mentalist" won't be dwelling on the villain after Sunday's episode.

"Once the curtain is drawn back from these evil 'Wizard of Oz' characters, they tend not be very interesting dinner companions," Heller said. "They tend to be egomaniacal, one-track minds."

When asked what was most surprising about the show, Heller responded: "In this business, the most surprising thing is we're still on the air."

But it's going to be quite a different "Mentalist" after Sunday.
