Might a certain avid fanbase get its happy ending?
CBS has released photos from The Mentalist‘s Season 6 finale, airing May 18, and there’s much Jane, much Lisbon and much of them together. And zero Pike.
In the yet-to-be-renewed procedural’s finale, titled “Blue Bird,” a new lead in a cold case requires Lisbon to delay her plans to leave for Washington, D.C. with Agent Pike, offering Jane time to finally come to terms with his feelings for her and decide on a course of action.
I sense a bit of angst in a couple of the photos below — that is, when not distracted by Teresa’s wowzers dress. And could that final slide be from the final scene of the season/possibly series…?

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on Mentalist's finale (6x22)

Ausiello: These two new images from the May 18 closer (see photos, right) suggest a quite different, maybe-not-so-happy ending for the pair (at least compared to these more optimistic-looking pics).

Jane, Lisbon, and a gamut of emotions (6x22, season finale, photos)
After seeing some of the first photos for the upcoming season 6 finale of “The Mentalist” entitled “Blue Bird,” we imagine you having a pretty wide range of emotions. There are happy sightings in here, sad sightings, and a rare opportunity to see Lisbon in a very different sort of wardrobe than usual.
In the end, though, there is still one question that everyone wants to know: Is this going to be the hour where Jane and Lisbon finally get together? You’ve had a full six seasons of buildup, which we like to think of as plenty of time for everything in the past to be in the past, and for them to have an opportunity to move forward together.
Of course, there is still a major roadblock that stands in the way of the two parties having the ending that Jane desires so much right now, and his name is Agent Pike. In a way, we feel bad for him, given that he seems like a pretty good guy, and hasn’t done anything to really deserve having his heart smashed. Who knows? We’ll just imagine that he has a true love out there in DC after he moves (hopefully without Lisbon), and maybe he’ll find something there.

Mentalist -The reason that we feel a little bit of sadness right now is merely due to the fact that “The Mentalist” has not been picked up yet for a seventh season, and it’s not looking great that it will be by CBS. This may lead to the studio exploring other options, but we don’t think that the journey for this show is over just yet.

See Jane, Lisbon in ‘Silver Wings of Time’ (6x17 promotional photo)
Sunday night’s new episode of “The Mentalist” is entitled “Silver Wings of Time,” and the word “time” in here is very significant when you think about what the story is. At the center of it is a death-row inmate struggling to prove his innocence, and a case that will once again test Jane and Lisbon and push them to at least some of their limits.
Also, they’ll be spending some time together! The first photo above from this episode shows the two of them seemingly enjoying each other’s company, which is going to be very important for Jane given what we know about Lisbon’s current romantic situation now. At the end of this past episode, we saw her seemingly accept a date from Agent Pike (Pedro Pascal). If Jane wants to make a move and actually have some sort of romantic future with her, he may have to move quickly.
Another reason that he may need to make a move on Lisbon now? Remember that the future of the show is in jeopardy. There is no word yet on a season 7 renewal, and at the time that CBS makes up their mind on the show’s future, production will most likely be long over. Producers therefore have to make the decision as to if they’re willing to risk a cancellation before making a move with these two … if they want to make a move with them, that is.
There are a few more episodes of “The Mentalist” ahead, and we’ll have some more news on what lies ahead soon enough.

6x16 "Violets" - Lisbon’s new love interest arrives (photo)
Next week on “The Mentalist,” the story is moving forward from being about Rigsby and Van Pelt to a couple that has been “will they or won’t they” for years: Jane and Lisbon. Unfortunately for you, there is probably not going to be the sort of quick-fix solution to this problem that you would be hoping for.
Instead, next week’s “Violets” introduces Pedro Pascal (“Game of Thrones“) as Agent Pike, a handsome man who Lisbon is going to be drawn to not long after the story begins. Could this cause some jealousy, or be a distraction from the case? We’ll just have to see how this all plans out, but for now, take a look at our full synopsis for the episode below:
While we understand there being some mixed emotions at the thought of a new man coming in and clouding up the picture, there is at least thing when it comes to a silver lining in it all: Watching Jane and Lisbon spend so much time together in the first place. This may feel like a very old-school episode of “The Mentalist,” which we have not really had since before the Red John case started to pick up steam earlier on in the season.

First Look At Lisbon's New Boyfriend In 'Violets' [PHOTOS], Who Is He?
The Mentalist team is preparing to pose as cons to dismantle a ring of art thieves, but Teresa Lisbon will steal someone's heart instead.
The former CBI agent will get a new love interest during "Violets," and it won't be Patrick Jane (Simon Baker). Instead, Lisbon (Robin Tunney) will have a romantic five-episode arc with Pedro Pascal's FBI Agent Marcus Pike (see gallery above).
A member of the FBI art squad, Pike will be teaming up with Agent Abbott's (Rockmond Dunbar) crew for their sting in episode 16. Described by TV Line as a "charming man with integrity, a blue collar cop with FBI smarts," Pike will swoop in to take on a role that fans have long hoped that Jane would play.
While the end of the Red John story opened up possibility of a relationship between Jane and Lisbon, a Jisbon pairing has yet to materialize. However, series creator Bruno Heller has not completely ruled out the possibility that the long-time partners will eventually find themselves in a romantic relationship.
"They haven't been thinking about [their growing closeness] while it's been happening, so all this accumulated emotion and feeling has been building up, essentially, behind them," Heller explained to TV Line as the series moved into its post-Red John plot. "It's only when they step away from that and can turn around and look back that they will really start to see how they feel about each other, and it's great fun to explore that on the page. I think it's going to be a whole different look at these two characters."
With The Mentalist still on the ropes for a season 7 renewal, there is an ever-increasing chance that Jane and Lisbon won't be given enough time to properly analyze their feelings for one another.
