Show exec on Jane’s reaction to Lisbon’s love life

Do you enjoy Lisbon’s new beau Agent Pike on “The Mentalist“? He seems like an okay enough guy, but let’s be real here: He could probably enter the show giving millions of dollars to charities and fans still wouldn’t like him. He’s the latest obstacle for Jane and Lisbon, and he’s not going anywhere at least through the rest of season 6.

In the last new episode a little over a week ago, we saw Patrick sitting alone while Lisbon accepted a pancake-date (clearly, one of the best kinds of dates) from her new beau. Want a trip into what Jane may have been thinking about in that moment? While you can’t really climb into the brain of a fictional character, executive producer Tom Szentgyorgyi does his best to make his purported thought process clear to TVLine:

“I think Jane was feeling curiously like a third wheel – something he doesn’t feel very often – and wondering why he felt that way … Pike is with us through the end of the season, and he will become a increasingly important figure in Lisbon’s life, so Jane is wondering what he’s feeling, because he’s been the most important man in Lisbon’s life — and suddenly he might not be.”

If this was any other season for “The Mentalist,” we’d probably be more on board with this character being there. Something needs to make Jane realizes that he’s letting time pass him by, and Lisbon’s not going to wait around forever for him to sweep her off her feet. But, the show’s future is still uncertain. We’ve been asked a ton about this lately, and we feel like there are three things holding back a season 7 renewal:

1. Low ratings in the 18-49 demographic on CBS. You can blame them on preemptions and the show airing really late on some nights, but low ratings are low ratings. Fans tend to care about excuses more than networks.

2. Contracts for actors tend to start ballooning outward at around this time, and even without Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti on the cast anymore, there are still cast members to pay who have been a part of the show for a very long time.

3. This is not a CBS show, which means that syndication money for them is not going to be the same that it would be for a show like “The Good Wife.”

Round Table: 6x16 "Violets" (fans Q & A review)

A deadly gang of art thieves had Patrick Jane in his glory on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 16, as he took the entire team undercover for an elaborate con to catch the bad guys.
Our TV Fanatics Robin Harry and Christine Orlando are joined by The Mentalist fan Neha to discuss how they feel about Lisbon and Marcus Pike and what Jane was thinking when he cast his latest con.
------------------------------------------------------
What do you think of Lisbon dating Marcus Pike?
Robin:  I'm okay with it. I'm not a hardcore shipper, but I do think the writers are heading for a Lisbon/Jane end game (which I'm surely on board with). In the meantime though, Lisbon deserves to be wined and dined, and Marcus seems like a good guy with excellent taste.  I say go for it, Lisbon!
Neha:  When I first heard the spoilers about Pike I wasn't sure, but now that I have seen him in action, I absolutely love him! He felt really refreshing to me. In a world where the only man in Lisbon's life expects her to almost always read between the lines, a direct no mess, no games approach must be like the first day of spring for her. Of course, she grabbed it! Their chemistry is great and I think Lisbon needs to have some fun at this point.
Christine:  I agree with Neha that Pike's direct approach was a huge contrast to Jane. I'm OK with Lisbon and Pike dating as long as it's just for a few episodes and it's used to help move Teresa and Patrick's relationship forward. I've got my fingers crossed that that is where this story is headed.

Did you see any subtext in the roles Jane gave everyone in his elaborate con?
Robin: Yes and no. I'm sure he thoroughly enjoyed having Lisbon as the girlfriend and Fischer as the tramp, but he was also being practical.  Kim practically seduced Jane while he was in exile so he knew what she was capable of, and I can't even imagine watching Lisbon try to seduce someone. Conversely, he and Lisbon have known each other longer and have better chemistry, and would make a much more believable couple.
Neha:  Yes, absolutely. He's always said for a lie to really work, there has to be some truth in it. Kim got to be the seducer because, let's face it, that's what she was on the island with Jane. Also after he walked into that banter between Lisbon and Pike in the stolen art museum, I don't think Jane wanted her to spend any behind the scenes time with Pike.
Christine: Yes, I thought that was lots of fun. That he dressed Lisbon in that very feminine white dress and gave her the role of his girlfriend but put Fischer in the tacky animal print and made her the seducer had me wondering if they were simply roles he thought they could play or did he subconsciously see them in these roles in real life.

Do you believe McKaye was right? Is Lisbon Jane's soft spot?
Robin: Oh my gosh, yes.  Whether platonically or romantically, there's no denying that Jane loves Lisbon and would do anything for her.
Neha:  Oh, absolutely, if Lisbon is not his soft spot I don't know who is. If McKaye had put a gun to Lisbon's head Jane would have given up pretty much anything.
Christine:  McKaye got it right. If nothing else she is his best friend but I think they're on the cusp of being much more.  I don't know how Jane would handle it if he ever lost her.
Who had the best outfit of the episode?
Robin: The black and white dress Lisbon wore the day after the party was just fabulous.  I want one!
Neha: Lisbon, we never get to see her out of her button up shirts and blazers, this was a great change.
Christine:  I'm with Robin, I really liked Lisbon's black and white dress. It really stood out because we never see her in skirts. But I also couldn't help but notice all of the scarves Jane wore. I don't know why but every time I saw him in one it made me smile.
What was your favorite scene from this episode of The Mentalist Season 6?
Robin: This is the most fun episode we've had in FOREVER, so it's strange that my favorite scene was a sad one.  It absolutely broke my heart to see Patrick at the end of the episode, sitting all alone in the dark. Without Red John and without Teresa, he really is lost.
Neha: I really enjoyed this episode, more than I thought I would. Surprisingly, my favorite scene was the one in the fish bowl when Wiley was forced to brief everyone. They all looked so amused, like when a toddler plays doctor and you play the patient. Also, the look on Lisbon's face when she saw that dress was priceless. Patrick's direct quote Wiley read out at the end, all made for an excellent scene!
Christine:  I really enjoyed Pike and Wiley watching the scene at the bar unfold over the video monitor. There's something about Wiley's enthusiasm that's just infectious. I think Jane has a new protégé.

Last season the Cancellation Bear asked "Which show would be moved to Friday?" after the cancellation of Vegas. It ended up being Hawaii Five-0, which many commenters predicted (Sadly, the bear didn't use a poll, and those comments are now hidden since we began using Disqus for commenting.)

With cancellation pending for The Mentalist, the bear won't make the "no poll" mistake again.

Which CBS show do you think will take The Mentalist's place on Sunday night? Whether it takes the 10pm slot or The Good Wife gets moved to 10pm and the new Sunday show airs at 9pm.

The odds players will certainly choose a veteran drama. The daredevils may guess that it will be a new drama. For the truly crazy, the bear has added the two sitcoms choice. And finally, for the absolutely delusional, you can guess that The Mentalist won't be canceled at all!

The 'Silver Wings Of Time' Starts Ticking for Patrick Jane (6x16, 6x17)

After setting traps for the art thieves, Patrick Jane is ready to take up another task in the The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 17 'Silver Wings of Time'.

In the last episode 'Violet,' Jane and his colleagues plan a sting operation to nab a notorious group of art thieves. But at the end, things turn ugly and the squad members are seen risking their lives while dealing with the dangerous group.

Meanwhile, beautiful Teresa Lisbon is seen flirting with the new FBI agent Marcus from the art squad (a bit of heart-ache for Jane and Lisbon fans).

However, fans must have enjoyed the cute moment when a radiant Lisbon in her red cute pajamas come downstairs to wrap a blanket on Jane.

During the mission, the 'no formality guy' Marcus asks Lisbon for a romantic date.

Meanwhile, it's time for Jane to shake up and come out from his dark past or soon he might let go the love of his life, Lisbon, whom he cares for a lot.

Moving over, there is some exciting journey ahead for Jane, who was assigned by the FBI to solve a case in order to save a man from execution.

In an official spoiler synopsis released by CBS, Patrick Jane will have only two days to save an innocent man who is on death row in the episode 'Silver Wings Of Time', entertainment news website ontheflix.com reported.

Jane's clock-ticking voyage through the next 48 hours for saving the death row inmate by uncovering the dark secrets behind the gruesome crime seems to be a thrilling package of entertainment for The Mentalist fans.

Will Jane be able to solve the case by running against time and can he offer the silver wings of freedom to the soon-to-be executed man?

Viewers can also expect a little flirty drama between Lisbon and Marcus in the upcoming episode.

The Season 6, Episode 17 will be directed by James Hayman and the writers are Tom Szentgyorgyi and Rebecca Cutter. Shannon McClung (Agent Collins), Jud Tylor (Mae Feinberg), John De Lancie (Edward Feinberg) and Oscar Torre (Luis Cruz) will be the guest stars for the same.

The Mentalist Season 6, 'Silver Wings Of Time' will be aired on Sunday 9 pm on 13 April on CBS.

Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.

Jane better make a move on Lisbon soon… (6x16, review)

“The Mentalist” aired its first real episode without Rigsby and Van Pelt in the cast (even if they have been gone occasionally in other episodes) Sunday, and it actually felt more like an old-school hour than most of what we’ve seen since this “New Beginning” for Patrick Jane. There was a case that caused the characters to go undercover, have some fun moments, and catch some bad people in the process.

As a viewer, this is all fine to watch and pretty enjoyable. Unfortunately, it is a little bit more difficult to discuss as a reviewer, since it all is so formulaic and there are few standout moments other than watching Patrick Jane act like a pretentious art collector.

We have a feeling that what more people are going to have an interest in is the arrival of Pedro Pascal as an FBI Agent who has taken a liking for Lisbon … which in turn hurts everyone out there hoping to see her with Jane at some point before the series comes to a close. The tough part of this is that Pascal’s character seems to be a pretty nice guy, and you don’t want to see a nice guy fail. He treats Lisbon well so far, and has been much more forward with his feelings than Jane has.

Yet at the same time, we still want to root for her and Jane to work things out. This relationship for her should be good for forcing Patrick to be proactive, but don’t expect this story to be hurried along. There are many more cases to be solved, fun moments to be had, and clever Jane plans involved marching bands to be hatched. Patience is a virtue, but let’s not hope producers are so patient that the show gets canceled before there is resolution. Grade: B.

6x16 "Violets" (Insider's Blog)

Posted on Mar 31, 2014 02:15pm

Episode 616 "Violets"

When I was assigned to write episode 616 of The Mentalist, I started with one very simple idea. I had just finished writing “The Great Red Dragon,” which was our show at its darkest, so for this one I wanted to do an episode where our characters had fun and Robin Tunney wore a pretty dress. In fact, in the episode she wears two pretty dresses, and a lot of the other characters get new clothes as well, so I more than reached my goal. (our costume designer Amanda Friedland deserves a special shout-out for this episode).

That simple idea quickly grew into the idea of a long con, art heists and Jane and Lisbon going undercover as a couple. I quickly knew I would have to break the conventions of a normal Mentalist episode, where the identity of the killer is a mystery until the end. Instead, we meet the bad guys very quickly in order to give Jane and the team more time to mess with their minds. Also, in most episodes Jane’s trick isn’t fully revealed to the audience until the killer is caught, but this time we played the con cards-up.

While Jane and Lisbon working together is the center of the episode, the rest of the team really shines as well. Cho, Abbott and Fischer get to show new sides of their characters, and I was particularly impressed with Joe Adler as Wiley, who gets to serve as the narrator of the long con.

But my favorite part of the episode to shoot was the exciting art heist that opens the episode. I love a good heist film, and director J Miller Tobin did a great job of giving the scene some thrilling moments. The days on set when you get to watch while an SUV is driven through a plate-glass wall and men with masks and machine guns jump out, and it all is happening because of things you typed … those are the days its good to be a TV writer.

While on the surface the episode is a fun stand-alone, it also introduces a subplot that will play out for the rest of the season: Lisbon meets Marcus Pike (played by the great Pedro Pascal), who is immediately taken by Lisbon. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say this about Pike: his best character trait is one that Jane may be lacking when it comes to Lisbon, and I think it’s that trait is what makes Pike appeal to Lisbon. But of course this episode is the beginning of this story, not the end of it. So stay tuned …

Sparks fly between Teresa Lisbon and FBI agent (6x16: Violets, spoilers)

Patrick Jane is looking at finding himself in the middle of a large argument between two FBI agents on Sunday night. Usually it is Jane who causes all the drama, but this week it is Teresa Lisbon who seems to have found someone that she is attracted to. This “The Mentalist” spoiler offers details about the episode “Violets” that airs on March 30. Viewers who don’t want to know details need to look away now. According to the Latino Post on Friday, the search for the next set of thieves requires a dangerous sting operation.

Jane enlists his colleagues in a dangerous sting operation to catch a deadly team of art thieves. Using typical methods that he usually finds to work, there seems to be a bit of a risky side to the plan and it leaves everyone uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, sparks fly between Teresa Lisbon and an agent from the FBI’s art squad. The two seem to be interested in each other which is a minor distraction.

While the show might be cancelled after this season, some fans are asking why Lisbon would not be interested in Jane instead of someone she just met working on a case. The pairing of the two stars has been a step away for several seasons and it appears now, before the end of the series finale, the viewers won’t get any satisfaction of knowing the couple could have been a possibility either.

“The Mentalist is on CBS with the episode “Violets” airing on March 30 at 10 p.m. ET.

The Mentalist 6x16 "Violets" - Sneak Peek #3 (with Dennis Abbott & Teresa Lisbon)

The Mentalist 6x16 "Violets" - Sneak Peek #2 (with Kim Fisher)

Jane Coaches Lisbon on Dressing to Impress (6x16, Sneak Peek #1)

On Sunday's The Mentalist, Jane (Simon Baker) and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) dress to impress as they go undercover to try to trap a team of art thieves. But Lisbon — who cleans up pretty nicely, we might add — has a more difficult time adjusting to black tie attire than Jane does.

In the exclusive sneak peek below, Jane hilariously instructs his partner to "try a little less Joan Crawford, a little more Barbara Stanwyck."

Lisbon's efforts apparently pay off elsewhere in the episode, when she catches the eye of Special Agent Marcus Pike (Pedro Pascal), who's being introduced as a love interest for Teresa.

In the next episode, Pedro Pascal will guest star as an FBI agent Agent Pike, as well as Lisbon's new beau. He will have a five-episode stint on the series.

TVLine hints that Jane will come between the two in the next episode, as Jane will go undercover with Lisbon as pretend husband and wife.

On the next episode, "Violets," "Jane's latest ruse is a dangerous sting operation to catch art thieves. An FBI agent from the art squad hits it off with Lisbon."

6x16 "Violets" - Lisbon’s new love interest arrives (photo)

Next week on “The Mentalist,” the story is moving forward from being about Rigsby and Van Pelt to a couple that has been “will they or won’t they” for years: Jane and Lisbon. Unfortunately for you, there is probably not going to be the sort of quick-fix solution to this problem that you would be hoping for.

Instead, next week’s “Violets” introduces Pedro Pascal (“Game of Thrones“) as Agent Pike, a handsome man who Lisbon is going to be drawn to not long after the story begins. Could this cause some jealousy, or be a distraction from the case? We’ll just have to see how this all plans out, but for now, take a look at our full synopsis for the episode below:

“Jane enlists his colleagues in a dangerous sting operation to catch a deadly team of art thieves. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Lisbon and an agent from the FBI’s art squad.”

While we understand there being some mixed emotions at the thought of a new man coming in and clouding up the picture, there is at least thing when it comes to a silver lining in it all: Watching Jane and Lisbon spend so much time together in the first place. This may feel like a very old-school episode of “The Mentalist,” which we have not really had since before the Red John case started to pick up steam earlier on in the season.

First Look At Lisbon's New Boyfriend In 'Violets' [PHOTOS], Who Is He?

The Mentalist team is preparing to pose as cons to dismantle a ring of art thieves, but Teresa Lisbon will steal someone's heart instead.

The former CBI agent will get a new love interest during "Violets," and it won't be Patrick Jane (Simon Baker). Instead, Lisbon (Robin Tunney) will have a romantic five-episode arc with Pedro Pascal's FBI Agent Marcus Pike (see gallery above).

A member of the FBI art squad, Pike will be teaming up with Agent Abbott's (Rockmond Dunbar) crew for their sting in episode 16. Described by TV Line as a "charming man with integrity, a blue collar cop with FBI smarts," Pike will swoop in to take on a role that fans have long hoped that Jane would play.

While the end of the Red John story opened up possibility of a relationship between Jane and Lisbon, a Jisbon pairing has yet to materialize. However, series creator Bruno Heller has not completely ruled out the possibility that the long-time partners will eventually find themselves in a romantic relationship.

"They haven't been thinking about [their growing closeness] while it's been happening, so all this accumulated emotion and feeling has been building up, essentially, behind them," Heller explained to TV Line as the series moved into its post-Red John plot. "It's only when they step away from that and can turn around and look back that they will really start to see how they feel about each other, and it's great fun to explore that on the page. I think it's going to be a whole different look at these two characters."

With The Mentalist still on the ropes for a season 7 renewal, there is an ever-increasing chance that Jane and Lisbon won't be given enough time to properly analyze their feelings for one another.

Undercover Romance - Jane & Lisbon (6x16, photos)

Jane and Lisbon may never have been under covers together... but the duo will go undercover on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 16.

In a couple weeks, a deadly gang of art thieves has Jane and Lisbon taking unusual measures to bring them to justice - and Jane certainly looks right at home living the good life.

Jane may end up sleeping on the coach, but that doesn't mean that Teresa won't pay him a visit in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately, there's a handsome FBI agent in the art squad who takes particular notice of Lisbon...and we're guessing it's not in a professional way.

The Mentalist Casts Graceland Actor as Lisbon's New Beau

TVLine has learned exclusively that Pedro Pascal — whose recent TV credits include Graceland, Red Widow and an upcoming arc as Game of Thrones‘ Oberyn Martell — has joined the CBS procedural in the recurring role of FBI Special Agent Marcus Pike.

Pike is described as “a charming man with integrity, a blue-collar cop with FBI smarts.” As previously scooped by my Inside Line column, when the G-man enlists Jane and Lisbon to help track a band of art thieves, he takes an instant shine to the latter and sets out to sweep her off her feet.

Pascal debuts in Episode 16, and will be around for at least five episodes. The Mentalist resumes Season 6 on March 9, with Episode 13.
