Just when he was getting so close, it was all pulled away on "The Mentalist." The FBI dismantled the CBI, thus taking over the hunt for Red John. This also essentially kicked Patrick Jane off the case.
“We’re done. There’s nothing more to do here. Just go home. Get some rest," Jane told Lisbon, but she didn't believe he would really quit the case. "I’m not quitting. I’m letting go," he said in response. "It’s out of our hands for now.”
Of course, this isn't the end of the Red John story -- but it nearly is. The series-long mystery is set to end next week, and co-producer Jordan Harper had quite a tease for TVLine. He told the site, "Both Jane and Red John have always fancied themselves as the ‘smartest guys in the room, and one of them is right.”
For now, TV Fanatic's Christine Orlando is left to speculate. "Do you believe that Stiles, Haffner and McAllister are truly dead or could one of them still be pulling the strings?" she wrote. Is Gail Bertram actually Red John? I'd say he's got the arrogance and the capacity for horrific violence that could make it so. At this point nothing on 'The Mentalist' would surprise me.”
