‘Brown Eyed Girls’ entertains, frustrates

“The Mentalist” is coming close to the end of the sixth season, and we find ourselves extremely conflicted right now. Even though we know just what direction the show is heading in when it comes to the Jane / Lisbon relationship, it doesn’t quite make the process of getting there any more palatable at all.

First of all, we understand why the show is dragging its feet when it comes to giving you answers on the Jane / Lisbon relationship. It’s a syndicated, procedural drama. It giving us that multi-part ending to the Red John storyline earlier this year an anomaly rather than something that is going to happen here on a regular basis. Most of the time, the show is going to be much more intent to just have isolated storylines with just a hint of something that can be relevant in the long-term. As a fan of the show, you really just have to be able to accept that, and then move on. It’s just hard when you know that there could only be a few episodes left in the entire series.

The actual story itself of “Brown Eyed Girls” was solid, and there were some genuinely funny moments between Jane and Abbott. We were also glad to see Cho have something more to do, since he and Kim Fischer have been practically forgotten about the past few weeks. (Granted, Kim was never that intriguing of a character on the show in the first place following “My Blue Heaven.”)

At times, it is clear that the show is still struggling to find its stakes now that Red John is over, and outside of Jane and Lisbon, we hope that there is a formation of a new Big Bad next season … if that happens. For now, let’s just say that this was a typical “Mentalist” episode that didn’t give us enough Jane / Lisbon progress, even if he is probably not feeling too great about how he handled the news that she could be moving to DC. Grade: C+.

Lisbon accused Patrick Jane of having ulterior motives for interrupting her date with Marcus Pike... but it turned out what he had found was a human trafficking ring on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 19.

Below, TV Fanatics Robin Harry and Christine Orlando are joined by The Mentalist fan, Entwife to debate why Lisbon took so long to come clean about her possible move to D.C. and whether or not there is a secret Jisbon shipper on the FBI team...

Will Jane tell Lisbon that he has feelings for her?

Robin: While I'm sure there will be arguments that he has no feelings for her, that end scene was surely not the look of a man who's certain his love is platonic. (Sorry, non-shippers!). However, I don't think he will do anything about it unless some outside situation compels or propels him to do so.

Entwife: Yes, I think he will eventually. At this point in the season "eventually" needs to be very quick. I think he made a camouflaged start in the ending scene where they so flagrantly lied to each other about their feelings about Pike and the DC move. From the promo for next week, he seems to take the next step of saying he hopes she'll stay. And she responds very happily, from my point of view. It needs to move pretty fast from there. But then, of course, we get the grand jury obstacle.

Christine: Lisbon joining the FBI in Austin was one of the top things on Jane's list when he signed his deal. I think his first instinct is to step back and let her be happy but I'm really hoping that something will compel him to tell her how he really feels because I think watching her walk away will break his heart.

Why didn't Lisbon tell Jane sooner about her possible move D.C.?

Robin: She also thought Jane was disrupting her date on false pretense, so I don't think she knows how Jane feels about her relationship. I think she didn't tell him because she was uncertain and afraid of what his reaction would be. Judging by that last scene, she expected him to be upset or contrary.

Entwife: I think she was being a bit cowardly and actually somewhat hostile. She didn't want to face it, apparently intended to let him find out by the grapevine. Very cruel and irresponsible in a friendship, in my opinion. Even her response to Abbott revealed underlying hostility, essentially he's a "psychic," let him figure it out. She knows he's not a psychic. It was a patent lie. Is it what she intended to say to Jane when he found out and probably confronted her with it? Ow. Payback for the times he just up and left her?

Christine: I think she's just as conflicted about her feelings for Jane as he is about her. He's most certainly hurt her in the past and has lied to her frequently. I think she's uncertain what Jane's feelings for her truly are and she's probably afraid to find out one way or another. In other words, it's complicated.

Is Abbott a Lisbon shipper? Why was he encouraging Lisbon to tell Jane?

Robin: I wouldn't brand him a shipper on that one conversation. He's just a man with a normal human sense of decency, who knows that people as close as Lisbon and Jane are tell each other when they're contemplating a life-altering decision. Abbott likes Jane and just didn't want to see him blind-sided.

Entwife: Thank goodness for Abbott! He acted as the moral compass for Lisbon about what she was doing. When she realized it had already got to Abbott, and he was warning her that Jane was about to find out, he was nudging Lisbon to at least be honorable with Jane if she was truly going to leave. Her reaction seemed both fear and pain when she got in that elevator. Perhaps embarrassment, too. I do think Abbott is a kindly, subtle shipper. He might not directly interfere. But he's seen them as a couple from the beginning, his opinion hasn't changed and I think he has a fondness for them and empathy for their troubled times right now.

Christine: Abbott has grown fond of them both and he knows how hard Jane lobbied to get Lisbon to come to Austin to begin with. He could see that Lisbon was in denial and made her face it. I'm not sure if he's a shipper, but he seems to be a good buy who cares about his team.

What was the best Patrick Jane moment of the episode?

Robin: This episode was one of the best Patrick Jane showcases since Red John. The case was interesting, and brought out most of the things that make Patrick a complex and fascinating character. My favorite moment would be his comforting of the dying girl in the bed. That's a side of Patrick we don't get to see very often, and it's beautiful.

Entwife: I want to say the ending scene, so astounding. But Jane had some tremendous moments throughout this episode. I guess I'd have to pick the ride in the Airstream. The expression on his face when Lisbon looked at him with such apprehension. It was pure gold, in my opinion, and something I haven't seen in Jane before. He looked like, what dreadful thing is she trying to keep from telling me? But he kept silent. I don't think he really wanted to know just then. But his looks-- wow! Simon is such an amazing actor and conveys so much without words.

Christine: He had a lot of great moments in this episode. Jane comforting the dying girl, begging for her to live was definitely my favorite. But him getting the crazy drunk to remember exactly where he found her came in as a close second. I love it when Jane works his magic to access memories. He's just so good at it.

Do you think Teresa is in love with Marcus Pike?

Robin: I think she loves being with him, but I don't think she's in love quite yet. I think his dependability and honesty are something she's been missing and craving in her life, but she's far too hesitant about the move for me to think she's in love.

Entwife: No. Absolutely not. She won't even answer Jane's question if things are going well with him. The last scene, Lisbon looks like she almost begging Jane for a rescue, to please speak for her. I think she sees his true feelings, but she needs him to speak. I think Jane caught Lisbon's true feelings, too, made a small movement to go after her and stops himself, undecided if it's the right thing to do. And she looks back at him, twice, as Pike is leading her away. I can't get her attachment to Pike as anything but an escape path completely away from Jane if he won't speak up.

Christine: Marcus Pike is the guy who is good on paper. If she wrote a list of all the things she thinks she wants in a romantic partner, he'd fit every slot. Unfortunately the heart doesn't care what's on that page. Lisbon likes him a lot. He's a good guy and her head is telling her she should love him but that doesn't mean she does or ever will.

What was your favorite scene from this Mentalist Season 6 installment?

Robin: Watching the flurry of emotions go across Jane's face as he realizes Lisbon is serious about Pike and is contemplating leaving. Simon Baker. My goodness. that man is one heck of an actor.

Entwife: The ending scene. Absolutely. Never was so much truth revealed in the pack of lies Jane and Lisbon were telling each other with their mouths. Because everything else about their body language, facial expression, eyes and tone of voice gave the truth away. No doubt for me anymore. Jane and Lisbon will be together by season's end. But I allow a 5% chance for Heller to destroy them out of sheer perversity, for "art." I will never trust him again, for any production.

Christine: I have to make it unanimous. That end scene was priceless. Lisbon looked oddly hopeful and Jane looked about as devastated as I'd ever witnessed as he stumbled over his words and told Teresa he wanted her to be happy. No matter what happens, I think these last few episode will be a bit painful to watch.

Ratings watch: ‘The Mentalist,’ ‘Revenge,’ ‘Resurrection’ see renewal chances dinged

The bad news continues for some shows that are firmly on the bubble, and while you expect ratings to teeter down a little bit in the spring months (there’s actually an option for people to go outside), you traditionally hope that the damage is not so bad that it actually keeps you from coming back.

At this point in the spring, we’re not really going to waste much time discussing the shows that are officially coming back for another season. This is more about the ones that really need the help in any way possible.

“The Mentalist” - With a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is poor even if the show continues to post nearly nine million viewers, things are not looking good for the show on CBS. Most of the network’s other dramas (save for “Intelligence”) have already been renewed for another season, and the network is losing hours for the fall. We still hope that Patrick Jane will return, but it may not be on its original network.

“Revenge” - Even though “Revenge” didn’t fare any better with a 1.2 last night, the odds are better for it to return for a number of reasons. For one, ABC Studios owns the show, so there’s an incentive to keep airing it. Also, one more season gets it to syndication, and they can bill it as the final season to drum up more excitement for Emily’s final showdown.

“Resurrection” - ABC made a mistake giving the show a week off, since its 1.9 rating marks a new series low. We still feel decent about its renewal prospects, mostly thanks to the numbers it pulled early on, and that it is only an eight-episode series. That is a perfect length to be some sort of fill in for shows that are canceled in the fall or spring.

Which Broadcast Net Had Two Shows Record Historic Ratings Lows in Sunday Prime? The Same Net That Won the Night

On a tepid Sunday night for the broadcast networks, the net that won the prime-time ratings battle also saw two of its series sink to all-time low numbers, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. That network was ABC, which won the demo for the night even with both "Resurrection" and "Revenge" setting new low marks.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that ABC's "Resurrection" fell 10% from its most recent original episode to an all-time low of 1.9 in viewers 18-49, while "Revenge" slipped 8% to a series-low 1.2 average. But "America's Funniest Home Videos" posted a 23% improvement, registering a 1.6, while "Once Upon a Time" surged 24% from the series low it set a week ago to post a 2.1 as ABC topped its rivals with a 1.7 overall rating for prime time.

CBS and Fox finished in a tie for second place in adults 18-49, but CBS won the night by a comfortable margin in total viewers.

CBS had a series low of its own, with "The Mentalist" falling 14% from a week ago to tie its low mark with a 1.2 average in 18-49. "The Good Wife" equaled the 1.3 it had a week earlier, while "60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race" both posted improved numbers. "60 Minutes" was up 27% with a 1.4 and "Race" ticked up 12% to a 1.9.

Fox's Sunday lineup had mixed results, with "Bob's Burgers" surging 83% from a week ago to a 1.1 in the 18-49 demo and "American Dad" drifting up 9% from its most recent original to a 1.2, while "The Simpsons" lost 12% from its most recent installment to settle for a 1.5. "Family Guy" held steady with its most recent installment, delivering a 2.1, and "Cosmos" equaled its 1.4 from a week earlier.

NBC was pre-empted in Portland for the NBA playoffs, meaning its numbers may be inflated and are subject to more than the usual adjustments. In preliminary returns, the prime-time lineup was up across the board in the 18-49 demo: "American Dream Builders" rose 40% from its all-time low a week ago to a 0.7 average; "Dateline" surged 38% to a 1.1; "Believe" climbed 9% to a 1.1; and "Crisis" rose 11% to a 1.0.

For prime time overall, ABC led the way in the 18-49 demo with a 1.7 average, followed by Fox and CBS (both with 1.5 averages), NBC (1.0) and Univision (0.8). CBS won total viewers, averaging 9.2 million to lead ABC (6.4 million), NBC (4.3 million), Fox (3.3 million) and Univision (2.2 million).

The Mentalist's Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon rarely check their law enforcement reflexes at the door, which turns out to be a lucky break for the victims of a human smuggling ring during "Brown Eyed Girls."

A momentary fleeting encounter with a suspicious stranger will prove to be a moment of serendipity for Lisbon and Jane. Between the faux psychics keen observational skills and FBI agent's cop sense, the pair will stumble upon a human trafficking case and launch an investigation to save a girl's sister.

As the investigation picks up, Jane and Lisbon will play out their own drama in background.

Lisbon is contemplating making a major change in her life, and Jane may be left in the dust. Agent Marcus Pike (Pedro Pascal) is thinking about accepting a job in Washington D.C., but his is unwilling to leave his new girlfriend behind. Solution - ask Lisbon to come with him.

Could Lisbon pack up and move for the third time this season? Fans will have to wait until the "romantic" season finale to see what she ultimately decides.

Lisbon and Jane to Kiss in the Finale?

"The Mentalist" returns to CBS this Sunday with a brand new episode revealing more about Lisbon's ongoing relationship with Agent Pike.

This week's show will follow Lisbon who is debating between moving to Washington, D.C. with her new boyfriend, Pike, or remaining on the FBI team with Jane. As season six winds down, "The Mentalist" fans are hoping for a romantic twist between Lisbon and Jane. Fortunately, viewers may get just what they want.

According to spoilers, the season finale "Blue Bird Inn" sees Jane at last awakened to his romantic feelings for Lisbon, according to Enstarz.com. Moreover, Jane may even propose to Lisbon before Pike has the chance to win her heart.

Furthering beliefs of love budding between Jane and Lisbon, "The Mentalist" creator Bruno Heller recently teased about the season six finale.

"It's a romantic finale," he told TV Guide. "With the death of Red John, there's a sense of tying [things] up and certainly this romantic angle is one of them."

However, other speculations over a "romantic" finale could see a wedding between Lisbon and Agent Pike, portrayed by Pedro Pescal. Nevertheless, Heller explained what Lisbon needs from Pike for now on "The Mentalist."

"In order to fulfill herself-even if she eventually fulfills herself with Jane, which she may or may not do- she has to find other relationships; other perspectives, other people who love her, just to feel fully who she is," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Fans of “The Mentalist” watched as FBI Agent Teresa Lisbon has finally found her possible suitor on the popular CBS show, but it isn't Patrick Jane as many viewers has visualized. The chance encounter with Agent Pike blossomed into more than just a working relationship and it gets more serious as the season finale gets closer. According to Hollywood Hills on Saturday, an unassuming abandoned house kicks off a drastic case for the FBI.

With such a serious injustice to the people being harmed the FBI stops the ring and arrests those folks in charge.

It was Agent Pike who offered a new life for the couple and a romance that could last a lifetime if she moves with him to Washington, D.C. As the romance does bloom into something bigger, it’s pretty obvious that Patrick is getting jealous of Agent Pike as it was once assumed that he might be Lisbon’s boyfriend. How the three work out the details for a strong conclusion to the story is yet to be known, but knowing Patrick Jane he probably has something up his sleeve to make Agent Lisbon thing twice before leaving the Texas FBI unit.

Remember the old days of “The Mentalist,” when you watched the CBI take on the case of the week before the Red John investigation really started to get crazy? There is something about the sneak peek below that reminds us of some of the early days of the show. Maybe it is the sight of Jane, Lisbon, and Cho all together, and that they are working on a case that doesn’t appear to have too much to do with necessarily anything long-term.

Even though this is a standalone plot, what this show has nonetheless proven to us time and time again is that it still has a capacity to entertain. This scene features the three aforementioned characters coming up to what may be some sort of refuge … or a prison. This case could actually get very dark before it is over, but don’t expect it to be something that carries over from week to week.

When it comes to that subject for the time being, the large focus seems to be on the Jane / Lisbon relationship and trying to figure out just what is coming next for them. She’s going to have a chance to move to Washington DC, and you can expect that story to drag on for at least a few weeks while she weighs the options … and possibly also see what Jane is going to do about it.

Sadly, we have no more news right now for you on just what the future for “The Mentalist” could be. The show still has not been renewed for another season, and while we reported yesterday that Warner Bros. is shopping the show elsewhere, it’ll be a little while before CBS firmly makes their decision one way or the other.

New details on Lisbon’s big decision

For six seasons of “The Mentalist,” one of the things that Patrick Jane has always been able to hang his hat on is the ability to control almost any situation. He’s incredibly smart, charming, and understands how to properly manipulate a situation to be in his favor.

Unfortunately for him, he is now running into a situation with Lisbon where he simply cannot do that. While he could do a few things to try to convince her to stay with him rather than go with Agent Pike (Pedro Pascal) to DC, he cannot force her to do anything. He has to actually win her over to his side, which has the potential to be sweet and romantic and everything that makes “Mentalist” fans just up and down on their couches like they are Tom Cruise during an episode of “Oprah.” (Cheers to dated references!)

Will this moment happen in the penultimate episode of the season entitled “Black Hearts”? It’s a little early to tell, since we know that most of the good stuff is being saved for the finale. Personally, we read the synopsis below much in the way that we read the ones for a number of other episodes that we’ve seen lately:

“With time running out to save the victims of a kidnapping ring before they are transported overseas, Jane and Lisbon zero in on the criminal enterprise’s mastermind. Meanwhile, Lisbon decides if she will move to D.C. with Agent Pike.”

No offense to the writers, but they are going to have a hard time hooking us with any procedural plot right now thanks to the hooks being put in on this Jane / Lisbon storyline. Now that it is clear they are heading in this direction, now is the time when closure is very much wanted. Will we get it? Given the show’s unstable future, we’re sure that we’ll at least get something. Nobody wants to end the season or perhaps the series with a revolt.

Simon Baker’s surprise in ‘Brown Eyed Girls’

“The Mentalist” is slowly reeling us in to getting answers when it comes to Jane and Lisbon’s relationship, and next week’s “Brown Eyed Girls” may be another step on that journey. However, at the same time it looks as though the show is going to continue taking a long route to get there.

For example, next week looks to actually have one of the most emotional cases we’ve seen in some time courtesy of a smuggling ring, and Jane could struggle to figure out its origins and how to stop it. Not only that, but cases of this horrific nature tend to bring out emotions in everyone, whether you are talking about Lisbon, Fisher, or Abbott. You can take a look at the full synopsis for the episode below:

So unfortunately, this synopsis does not really succeed in saying anything other than some stuff that you already knew either based on the promo below, or the events that actually transpired in the episode tonight. Lisbon hasn’t seemed to make her mind yet regarding what Pike offered, and the question you really have to ponder right now is simple: Is moving to DC to be with this man something that is really that she wants to do, or is she waiting for Jane to make a move? Hopefully, we’ll get a big reveal soon by her that this is happening, and he will then take advantage of the opportunity to convince her to stay.

Lisbon Leaving Jane Behind To Move To D.C.? Will This End Any Chance Of Romance? (spoilers)

"The Mentalist" season 6 spoilers is up and Teresa Lisbon is asked by Agent Pike to move in with him in D.C. and that could mean the end of the any prospect of romance between her and Patrick Jane.

For six seasons, both Lisbon and Jane have been skirting around the issue at hand even though they clearly have feelings for each other. A good chunk of the blame rests on Jane particularly his feelings after the Red John debacle.


Then here comes Agent Pike (Pedro Pascal) who's offering what Jane hasn't yet-a chance to build a future together, outside of work, and he's also smitten with Lisbon.

"The Mentalist" season 6 spoilers so far haven't really provided an indication that Jane is making a move on Lisbon but CarterMatt suggested that "maybe 'Brown Eyed Girls' will be the inspiration for this guy to finally make a move."

There are only three more episodes after "Brown Eyed Girls" on April 27 to give fans closure on the relationship between Jane and Lisbon if the show concludes in May.

"Another reason that he may need to make a move on Lisbon now? Remember that the future of the show is in jeopardy. There is no word yet on a season 7 renewal, and at the time that CBS makes up their mind on the show's future, production will most likely be long over," the blogsite said.

The "The Mentalist" Season 6 episode 17 will air Sunday and according to the official spoiler released by CBS, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) only has two days to conclude an investigation with the life of an innocent man at stake.

"Silver Wings of Time" could also tackle some more the Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) romance since in the previous episode, fans watched her accept a date proposal from Agent Pike.

What could take Lisbon away from Jane? (6x19)

For six years on “The Mentalist,” Jane and Lisbon have for the most part found a way to work together, trust in each other, and also solve a boatload of cases. So is there anything that could potentially tear them apart? As it turns out yes, though not exactly in a way that is even remotely malicious.

Instead, you have a man in Agent Pike who is thinking about his future, clearly likes Lisbon, and would love to have an opportunity to build a life with her. He’s not some mustache-twirling supervillain out to destroy anyone, even though we are still hoping that for her to end up with Jane.

Maybe “Brown Eyed Girls” will be the inspiration for this guy to finally make a move … and we hope so, given that this is the 19th episode of the season (airing on April 27), and there are only three more after this to give us a reasonably conclusion in the event that the show ends in May.

The only Jane / Lisbon scoop in here is that the two are at least spending time on the job together again, and we are happy about that … even if it doesn’t by any means equate with them being romantic. The show’s going to have a lot of ground to cover here in a short time, mostly because we don’t feel like Patrick was really processing his feelings very much after the death of Red John. He’s still trying to figure himself out, and what he wants moving forward. Hopefully, she ends up being a part of that equation; otherwise, it feels like the biggest tease ever and a disappointment.

6x19 "Brown Eyed Girls": Will Lisbon Move To DC With Pike? What About Her Partnership With Patrick Jane? (spoilers)

Teresa Lisbon's may be leaving town on The Mentalist.

The newly minted FBI agent hoped from CBI to a Washington police department and ten picked up everything and headed down to Texas to partner with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) when he returned from his two year's on the lamb. During "Brown Eyed Girls," however, Lisbon's new beau will want her to move to the nation's capital.

Marcus Pike (Pedro Pascal) was first introduced during "Violets," and the FBI agent is set to appear in at least five episodes. By time viewers see him for a third time in episode 19 ("Brown Eyed Girls"), Pike will be asking Lisbon to come live with him in D.C.


"He's very smitten with her and she deserves the attention," Pascal told TV Line of the pair's burgeoning relationship.

Will that attention be enough to get Lisbon to pull up stakes? According to Pascal, her relationship with Pike may last longer than the initial five episodes.

"[It's] all a question mark," Pascal said, according to TV Line. "I don't know how it's being wrapped, if it's being wrapped up or anything."


The Mentalist airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on CBC.
