With the month of May fast approaching, the question of which of this season’s shows will be returning for the 2014-2015 season looms large. Will The Neighbors land a third season on ABC? Will Almost Human make it to a second season? To help fans get an answer to these question, TVWise’s presents its second Broadcast TV Buzz column of the year (our first was posted last month, see it here), which lists, by network, the latest industry intel (buzz if you will) on which shows will be back next year and which shows are set to get the ax.
ABC
There has been some movement at ABC in the past few weeks. Still no renewals, but a couple more shows have officially been cancelled. So for those that missed it: Mind Games, Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, Lucky 7, Back In The Game and The Assets have all be cancelled. On the flip side of that, there are a number of series which are locks for renewal such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Castle, Modern Family and Once Upon A Time. Also set to be renewed is Revenge, Suburgatory, Resurrection, The Goldbergs, Nashville, The Middle and Last Man Standing. No one is talking as far as Marvel’s Agent’s Of S.H.I.E.L.D. goes, but I’d give it an even chance of coming back. Meanwhile, sources say that Super Fun Night, The Neighbors, Trophy Wife and Mixology are all facing cancellation. Meanwhile, Betrayal and Killer Women are both set to be officially cancelled.
CBS
Over at CBS not a lot has changed. As previously reported, the network has picked up most of their scripted line up with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, Criminal Minds, Elementary, 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mike & Molly, Mom, Two And A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory having all been renewed for the 2014-2015 season. With We Are Men cancelled, the fates of Friends With Better Lives, The Crazy Ones, Hostages, Intelligence and The Mentalist are still up in the air. Friends With Better Lives got a decent sampling this week and barring some significant ratings drop should earn a second season. While Intelligence finally landed a lucrative UK sale, the show is owned by ABC/Disney and with CBS getting no back-end, it, like fellow freshman Hostages will not be making it to a second season. The Crazy Ones at least has a shot at getting a second season, but it will depend on the net’s comedy development. Finally, The Mentalist looks like it may just swing a renewal as sources say “WB are pushing hard” for a seventh season.
The CW
Like CBS, there are not an awful lot of question marks at The CW. The network has already renewed Arrow, Supernatural The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Reign; leaving the fates of The 100, The Tomorrow People, Beauty & The Beast, The Carrie Diaries, Hart of Dixie and Star-Crossed. With strong drama development this season, especially with both Flash and Supernatural: Bloodlines expected to land series orders, CW execs will be making some tough calls. Word is that The Tomorrow People, which didn’t see enough of a bump from its move to Mondays, will be cancelled alongside Beauty & The Beast and The Carrie Diaries, with a source telling me some time ago that all three were “dead.” The 100 has been a very strong player for The CW and will be getting a second season, while, by all accounts, Hart of Dixie is now expected to earn a renewal as well. That said the Matt Lanter starrer Star-Crossed is not expected to return given its poor ratings performance.
Fox
Fox has already renewed most of their current line up for next season. But for those not following along too closely Fox has renewed The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Bones, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Sleepy Hollow, The Following and Glee. The network has also cancelled Us & Them and Raising Hope; and though the fell short of saying so, they have effectively cancelled Rake, with plans to burn off the remaining episodes on Saturday night. That leaves only Almost Human, Enlisted, Dads and Surviving Jack on the bubble. Surviving Jack premiered last week to an ok 5.2 million viewers and a 1.3 A18-49, more or less in line with the numbers for New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Odds are that barring further declines tonight, the series should earn a second season. As reported last month, the situation with Almost Human - which like CBS’ Intelligence just landed a UK sale – is not clear but sources on both sides of the equation remain optimistic about securing a pick up. I’m now hearing that Dads will be cancelled but, interestingly, despite being pulled from the schedule sources say that Enlisted is not done yet and still has a chance at coming back.
NBC
Since our last column NBC has renewed Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Parks and Recreation and Grimm for next season. They join The Blacklist which NBC picked up for a second season late last year. Other than that things have been fairly static. Growing Up Fisher, About A Boy, Community, Law & Order: SVU and Parenthood are all locks for renewal. Hannibal has a decent shot at renewal, but Believe and Crisis have been dropping in the ratings to the point that one or both are in real danger of being cancelled. For now, I’d give the edge to Believe. If the ratings for Crisis don’t stabilise it could well be facing the ax. Also set to be cancelled at NBC is Dracula and Revolution, joining the likes of Sean Saves The World, Welcome To The Family, Ironside and The Michael J. Fox Show which have already been cancelled.
